Upcoming Lecture by Dr Kwasniewski in Minneapolis, November 13

At the kind invitation of All Saints, the Minneapolis parish of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, I will be giving a lecture on Wednesday, November 13, at St. Boniface Church (629 NE 2nd St.): “Beyond ‘Smells and Bells’: Why We Need the Objective Content of the Usus Antiquior.” The lecture will be preceded by Low Mass at 6:30 pm at All Saints (435 4th St NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413).

I’m looking forward to meeting lovers of Catholic tradition from the Twin Cities! And if you know people who are “on the fence,” so to speak — who think that the Ordinary Form is “just as good” provided it’s ad orientem, in Latin, with chant and incense and so forth, invite them to come for a challenge. As important as the externals are (and I have always defended and will always defend that point!), the differences between the old and new rites go far deeper than such features.

Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Tiverton, R.I.

New TLM in Vero Beach, Florida

Beginning on December 2nd, the First Sunday of Advent, the church of St John of the Cross in Vero Beach, Florida, will have a Mass in the Extraordinary Form each Sunday at noon. The church is located at 7590 26th Street.

Solemn Mass for St John Vianney in Brooklyn

The church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Brooklyn, New York, will have a special Mass in the Extraordinary Form to pray with and for priests on the feast of St John Vianney, Patron Saint of Priests, on Wednesday, August 8th. The Mass will begin at 7 pm; the church is located at 245 Prospect Park West.

Corpus Christi Solemn Mass in Hyannis, Massachusetts

The Traditional Latin Mass Apostolate of Cape Cod will sponsor an Extraordinary Form Solemn Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi at St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, Massachusetts (347 South Street), on May 31st, starting at 1:00pm. A Eucharistic procession and Benediction will immediately follow. Since 2001, Cape Cod has been home to the only regularly scheduled Sunday and Holy Day Latin Mass in the Diocese of Fall River. In 2009 the Mass was moved from its original location in Chatham to Hyannis. The first Solemn Mass since the postconciliar reform was celebrated in this historic church on the Feast of the Epiphany, 2016.

Solemn Mass in Fall River, Massachusetts, May 23rd

Readers in southeastern New England may want to mark their calendars for this event. A Solemn Mass will be celebrated according to the 1962 Missal at Good Shepherd Parish (St Patrick Church) in Fall River, Massachusetts, on May 23, starting at 10:00 am, and followed by a Marian procession to nearby St Stanislaus Church. The church is located at 1598 South Main St.

The first Solemn Mass to be offered in this church since the liturgical reform was celebrated on May 26, 2016, the feast of Corpus Christi that year; it attracted several hundreds of the faithful, including Catholic school students, most of whom had never experienced the traditional Mass. It was my pleasure to celebrate the second Solemn Mass, a Votive Mass of Our Lady, on May 17 of last year. Father Andrew Johnson, the pastor, has worked hard to promote our Catholic liturgical, musical and spiritual heritage.

TLM for Lent on the Jersey Shore

The Traditional Latin Mass is returning this Lent to Holy Innocents Church in Neptune, New Jersey, after its enthusiastic reception at the parish this past Advent. The Masses will be celebrated on three Fridays in a row, March 2, 9, and 16, starting at 5pm; the church is located at 3455 West Bangs Avenue.

EF Solemn Mass for the Second Sunday of Lent in Santa Rosa, California

Our friend Fr Jeffrey Keyes has written in to let us know about the following. “I have been at the Cathedral of St Eugene for two years. In that time, I have celebrated an EF Missa Cantata each Sunday. With encouragement, affirmation, invitation, training and practice, we have taken men accustomed to the Ordinary Form, installed acolytes and permanent deacons, and readied them for the celebration of a Solemn High Mass. Since just before Christmas, we have done this about seven times; we hope soon to be able to do this every Sunday. It is my hope that many in Northern California may come to appreciate the beauty and sacredness of this wonderful Liturgy.”

Victoria’s Requiem for 4 Voices on All Souls in Littleton, Colorado

The FSSP parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Littleton, Colorado will celebrate High Mass on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, both starting at 7 pm. On All Saints, the music will include Mass II, the Gregorian propers of the day, and selected motets. On All Souls’ Day, the church will host both professional singers and members of the Vittoria Ensemble in Denver, joining with its own choir to sing Victoria’s Missa Pro Defunctis, along with several motets and the immemorial Gregorian Chants. The musicians will be performing the Victoria Requiem Mass for 4 voices, which is rarely used, since the 6-part requiem seems to have taken all the attention among Victoria’s works. You might have heard about Holy Ghost Parish in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Under the leadership of its pastor, Fr. Jay Finelli (the “iPadre”), it has become a showpiece of the New Liturgical Movement promoted by this blog (HERE’s what I mean). June 13th will mark the good Father’s 25th anniversary of ordination to the holy priesthood. His Silver Jubilee Mass (usus antiquior) will be celebrated on the preceding Sunday (Trinity Sunday), June 11th. Ad multos annos!

“Prayer is the heart of Carmelite life, and the chapel is the heart of a Carmelite monastery. The nuns adore Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist as the summit and source of our entire consecrated life during the two hours of mental prayer, the Divine Office, Rosary and other exercises of piety each day. In Carmel, the sacred liturgy is characterized by simplicity to allow more time for private prayer in accord with our hermit spirit. The Divine Office is usually recited on one tone, with Gregorian chant reserved for Sundays and feast days.

After our foundress Mother Teresa Margaret died, one of her cherished wishes began to be fulfilled: the restoration of Latin as our primary liturgical language. We discovered that after the vernacular languages had been approved for the liturgy, Blessed Pope Paul VI had written to all the monastic and mendicant communities begging them not to give up Latin in the Divine Office. Our daily Mass is celebrated ad orientem, with our chaplain and the people together facing the Cross, and Holy Communion is received at the altar rail. On some Mondays, Mass is celebrated in the Extraordinary Form. We are steadily adding more Latin chant to the celebration of Mass, and we welcome new members who share our love for our Catholic liturgical heritage.”
