Haydn and His Modern Musicologist

We are in the final stages of editing the Winter issue of Sacred Music, which focuses on orchestral Masses and Haydn's work in particular. One name keeps coming forward in the citations: H.C. Robbins. Here is a musicologist who worked hard to make the work of several composers more widely known and better understood. So it makes me sad to see an announcement today that he just died at the age of 83. This issue of Sacred Music would not be possible in its existing and wonderful form were it not for his work. It is a reminder to us all that great specialization can do wonderful things for the world.
