Ten Years Following the Advent Project

Here is an interesting conference in Ireland, February 19, you might consider:

To mark the tenth anniversary of the publication of James McKinnon’s The Advent Project, UCD School of Music and the Faculty of Theology, St Patrick’s College, Maynooth will co-host a one-day symposium on early medieval Roman chant and liturgy. Prof. Susan Rankin, Dr John F. Romano and Prof. Joseph Dyer will be keynote speakers.

The Advent Project: The Later-Seventh-Century Creation of the Roman Mass Proper published posthumously in 2000 remains a major contribution to our understanding of the formation of the medieval chant tradition in Rome. McKinnon’s work has stimulated much debate in musicological circles during the last decade but appears to have made little impact on liturgical and ritual studies. The organisers of this symposium hope to stimulate a fruitful dialogue and discussion between chant scholars, historians and liturgists and also welcome participants from other disciplinary backgrounds with an interest in early medieval Rome.

The symposium will take place on Friday, 19 February 2010 at the UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland, UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4 from 10.00am to 5.00pm. There is no participation fee and tea/coffee will be provided during the day. The programme includes a short recital of Gregorian and Old Roman chant featuring the propers of the Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) after which participants will have ample time to take lunch at one of the campus restaurants/cafés.
