Usus Antiquior at the University of Toronto Newman Centre, March 20th

An NLM reader sent in news of an historic event that will be taking place at the University of Toronto Newman Centre very shortly: there will be a Missa Cantata (Sung Mass) according to the 1962 Missale Romanum for the first time in decades.

What is particularly inspiring about this news is how it all came about through an idea, prayer, and finally the motivated actions of a group of lay Catholics.

They also mentioned that it was through NLM accounts of some of the liturgical initiatives that others have been undertaking, which played a part in inspiring and giving confidence to those who were proposing and organizing the usus antiquior at the University of Toronto Newman Centre.

This comment makes evident why sharing such stories and news here and elsewhere is an important aspect in encouraging one another.

Information and details from the Facebook group they set up for this initiative:

The idea of holding a Traditional Latin Mass at the university of Toronto's Newman Centre was initially raised at a meeting of the Newman Centre's Youth Council last September. The suggestion was very favourably recieved, which resulted in the formation of a group of people committed to helping organize the Mass. Father Howard J. Vennette of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter, whose clerics specialize in the Tridentine liturgy, had just arrived in Toronto that summer and graciously offered his services. The Pastor of the Newman Centre, Father Pat O'Dea, has also been most helpful in offering us use of the Centre and helping us to plan and promote this historic event.

The event will take place on Friday 20th March at 7:00p.m. It will begin with a brief introduction by Fr Vennette to the rubrics of the Mass and how to follow along with the missale [15-20min], followed by the Mass itself. There will be a reception in the Centre afterwards.

Whether you are completely new to the Traditional Latin Mass (aka the Tridentine Rite/Extraordinary Form) or thoroughly familiar with it, please feel free to come to this event, or pass the news along to any friends who might be interested.
