Here is the communion antiphon for this Sunday:
Chances are that you won't hear it, in which case you will miss the musical expression of what it means for light to shine down from the Heavens--and we can see it!--and bring down joy to all who follow Christ. You will miss how this chant begins high in the Heavens, in joyful mode 7, and comes to rest so gently and lovingly. You will miss the music that inspired saints and martyrs for many, many centuries.
The communion antiphon is not just a text. It is not just a song of one's choosing. It is a real thing, part of the structure of liturgy, as embedded as any prayer at Mass. If your music director doesn't know this, consider buying him or her Communio, so at least there will be knowledge, which is the beginning of good liturgical practice.
