The Re-Enchantment Project: Juventutem efforts to bring back Chant

THE ENCHANTMENT PROJECT

SPONSORED BY JUVENTUTEM AUSTRALIA

4 Gregorian Chant Workshops
to be given by
Mr David Molloy -
one of Australia's foremost
authorities on the Chant,
at the
CHURCH OF
ST AUGUSTINE
BALMAIN
UNDER THE AUSPICES OF
JUVENTUTEM AUSTRALIA

This project is designed to give expression to the explicit desire expressed by the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, "...that Gregorian chant be suitably esteemed and employed (130) as the chant proper to the Roman liturgy(131)." Sacramentum Caritatis

In addition to reiterating the esteemed position in which the Church holds Gregorian Chant, the Holy Father has added the plea that it be EMPLOYED.

The sacred chant can only be employed if it is known, thus we undertake this project to give Catholic's and anyone of goodwill, the opportunity to know, experience and learn about this musical form which lies at the very heart of Catholic spirituality and culture.

It is our hope that through these efforts we may contribute to the life of the Church as a whole, so that Gregorian Chant might again be heard and sung in our Churches and Schools in fulfilment of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican II, and in line with the requests of the recent Extraordinary Synod of bishops but above all that our worship might once again be in tune with our musical heritage re-establishing a hermeneutic of continuity.

The course will cover: Latin accentuation and pronunciation; Reading and singing chant; The moods of different chants - The Modes; How to conducting the chant; A suitable selection of hants to sing.
