Rome, All Saints and Relics




Seeing these Roman altars adorned for All Saints with the relics of so many saints, I am put to mind of Cardinal Schuster's reference of an inscription of Pope Damasus made in memory of the saints interred in the cemetery of Callixtus. It begins as follows:

Here are gathered, if you would know, a number of the just, for these venerable sepulchres hold the bodies of many saints. The kingdom of heaven possesses their sublime souls.
