Other Modern: Giuseppe Steffanina and the American Chapel of Basilica della Santa Casa, Loreto

Continuing with our consideration of the Other Modern, I recently came across the following photos of the American chapel, or the chapel of the Assumption, in the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto, Italy. The frescoes you will see here were painted by the artist Giuseppe Steffanina.

While in one sense they might be considered traditional, certainly in other senses -- aspects of colour and composition -- what we see here is rather modern (in a way perhaps similar to the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany) -- but, once again, it is a modernity that shows the marks of continuity.

The murals, which were executed in 1970, are intended to show themes pertaining to the proclamation of the dogma of the Assumption and of Our Lady of Loreto as the patroness of aviation and aviators.

(Sadly this is the largest and clearest photo I have been able to find of the entire chapel. If anyone else can find a larger photo, please sent it our way. Image source)
