Gregorian Vespers at St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, D.C.

At the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, this Sunday evening, September 20, 7:30, the Schola Cantorum under the direction of Thomas Stehle will be singing solemn vespers in Latin according to the Liturgia Horarum. It is open to the public. The prayer is entirely chanted in Latin drawing on psalmody in the Liber Usualis and the canticle from the new Antiphonale Monasticum, except for a polyphonic setting of the Magnificat by Orlando di Lasso, and a motet by Marenzio quoting Matthew’s account of Christ’s query to his disciples, “Quem Dicunt Homines.” After the prayer, a new hymn, The Calling of Matthew will be sung in English.

This is not to be missed.
