The Ecclesial Purpose of All Saints as Seen in the Martyrologies

First and foremost, a blessed Solemnity of All Saints to all NLM readers! Gaudeamus omnes in Domino, diem festum celebrantes sub honore Sanctorum omnium: de quorum solemnitate gaudent angeli, et collaudant Filium Dei. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating the feast in honor of all the saints, in which solemnity the angels rejoice and praise the Son of God. My colleague Dr. Jeremy Holmes has posted a wonderful article today at his blog, New Song, called "The Spirit of the Solemnity of All Saints." He looks at what the old and new Martyrologies tell us about this feastday, and then asks the question: What does it mean to say we observe all the saints in order that "we may be crowned by their triumph in the sight of the divine majesty unto endless ages"?
