October 9th: Patriarch Abraham

Continuing on with our highlighting of the days of the liturgical year which relate to the Old Testament prophets and righteous, I wanted to make note of a feast which occurred this past weekend, on October 9th, that of the Patriarch Abraham himself.

From the Roman Martyology:

On the same day, the memory of St. Abraham, Patriarch and father of all believers.

Within the nave of the great basilica church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, one can see the following fifth century mosaic of Abraham, his vision in the plains of Mamre, and the hospitality he provides to the three angels -- a depiction commonly referred to as "the hospitality of Abraham".
