High Altar of Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans

Recently we featured a Solemn Mass from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans which was celebrated on the anniversary of the motu proprio, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.

While the photos of the Mass were certainly what were of primary interest, I was struck by the high altar with its beautiful materials and richly coloured mosaics. Indeed, it struck me as noble and tasteful.

The altar was commissioned in 1926 and made from Carrara marble, having been purchased from the Fredrick Pustet Company of Cincinnatti and installed in the late 1920's and early 1930's.

I asked my contact in the seminary if we could get some close-up photographs of the altar, and thankfully they were able to oblige.
